Stay with me and we will have a fun adventure, and if l happen to not post every week please send me a note and say Hey wake up ok.. lol
It all started when l was a little girl, l was wowed by Big Trucks, Shiny Big Trucks with all that shiny chrome, sparkling lites, as they flew by my home along a hwy in Ontario..
Wow l use to stop and watch them, and said l would love to go for a ride in one of those. one day. and well that one day came,
Friends of mine owned a trucking company, hauled lumber from Quebec, to Michigan and one day l went in for a coffee at my moms restaurant/truck stop and Carl was there, we got talking and before l new it l was on my way to Michigan in this Big shiny Rig, it was AWESOME you could see for miles, and look down into cars, pickups and boy did l learn allot.. that day...
So that trip l did learn allot, and it did not take long to learn it either. l learnt that seeing the world through a windshield wasn' t so bad at all..
So on that trip it was exciting, thrilling and left me wanting to go more and more, and well then Brent Carl's brother came through on his way to Toronto and l was like can l go Brent please.. Sure you can go.. we will be home later tonite if that's fine with you....
Well by george that was Grrrreat..... We had so much fun, we had the tunes playing, and just driving , and it was again a grrreat day... l found myself wanting to do this more and more..
The funny thing was well l was still in school, wanting to be a Airline attendant, and that was it.. l was going to travel some how to some where, Then like l said this all happened,,
a few weeks went by and l was going to school and working parttime at my moms restaurant and this gentleman came in , we always talked and became good friends, he made me laugh, and was a steady faithful customer.
One evening before l started my shift Brad came in and l went and sat with him, he was burly , stocky man , with a heart of gold. so after getting to know Brad l came to realize, that wow, hes a nice person, and so one day l ran into him, l asked him, could l go for a ride with you to help you load your lumber in Northern Que..
Brad said , Dear if you would like to go, you are more then welcome , go and let your mom know where your going and when you will be home.,, then come back and we will go, bring a extra set of cloths, and pair of gloves ok cindy.. l said sure Brad l can do that, ok well l drove like crazy woman to my home and was so excited to tell my mom and dad, and my mom just looked at me, and said YOUR doing what?
Then after she calmed down, and found out whom l was going with, then it was not so bad...
But not many parents back in 1976 wanted to hear that there daughter was in love with Traveling let alone driving a Rig of anykind....
So the way we went, we got our coffee mugs filled, some munchies, and mom made us a lunch to take and eat on our way to Northern Que. which was about a 4 hr drive....
Off and running l was now sitting in a Blue Crush Velvet Air ride seat, and looking out the window of this Long Nose Peterbilt.. l loved this Rig, it was 3 shades of blue, done in stripes, and had so much chrome on it,and it shone... sparkling in the nite, as we drove, awesome ride....
So we headed up the road, and we arrived in Quebec...at this lumber yard, it was a wet rainy afternoon by now and gee my pretty blue Pete was not clean anymore... and we had to get out in the rain, and get the tarps off trailer, , chains out, to get ready to put on the lifts of lumber , the operator of the forklift, was really nice, and he helped us. we put the tarps on the lift of lumber and he lifted us and the tarps up and set us down on the trailer, wow, l said, now that's the way to climb up here.. we dropped the straps over, first , we put 2 chains over each bundle of lumber .
So then we proceeded to unroll tarps and as he put the lifts of lumber on, we unraveled the tarps, and started to open them and lay them over the strapped bundles, it was hard work but fun, then we jumped on the forks of the forklift and he lowered us then the fun began... we tighten the chains down with bear traps, and the had to do tarps Wow what ta job... lol
bungee straps, and lots of arm work involved but after a 1/2 hour we were done, and that load looked like a present at Christmas time, perfectly done... and looked awesome, and that keeps the wood dry to get to the customer clean, dry, and safely..
Until next week , toodles
June 8th 2011
Ridin and Gliden continued...
Like l said, l started this driving thing when l was very young. so where were we, aww yes, loaded and our way to Michigan..
That was a great trip, it was fun, l learnt alot. how to load, chain, and tarp wrap the load like a Christmas present. So anyways on our way home, Brad ask me if l would like to drive ! Wow l said ok,, and so we were on the 401 heading east bound from Windsor, and he pulled over at the first rest area and said ok young lady ,your turn.. so me l was scccccared.... and nervous but no that did not stop me, l then proceeded to get in drivers seat, get the steering wheel where l wanted it, my air ride seat at the spot where l was comfortable and l had been watching and listening along the way and l knew where first gear was, and so on, so the way l went, little touchy on the clutch first go around, but once l figured out how to shift with RPM's instead of the clutch it was GREAT!!
l had a blast, and l drove all the way to Toronto and then Brad said l had better take it from here
So that was fine, anyways that was my first trip driving, it was awesome, sitting up being able to see ahead of me 10 cars lengths, the power l felt, was like no other....
It just felt right, and l knew rite then l was going to do this for a living.as the days went by, l could not wait to go again, and l was working part time midnight shifts on Fri,Sat,and in the evenings while l went to school, and one nite Brad came in sat down, had a big grin on his face.. he said to me, hey young lady, how would you like to go to Vancouver.. BC Wow l was soooo excited, l jumped out of my skin,,, he said its ok dear, calm down, you have time, to go home shower, pack clothes for a week, and bring coff mug, and goodies to eat if you would like and don't forget your camera, l said OK, l am on it,,,
My mom came in to work and l asked her if l could go, she could see my eyes , they were sparkling with happiness, and she said now how could l say no to that little sparkling face, and l don't mind you going with Brad, at least l know him as well as your father.. well then my dear, you may go.... Please becareful and call me every day , every hour... lol
So wow off we went a couple hours later,,, and it was awesome, it was early spring, still kinda cool, and yes still cool enough to freeze...
It was a beautiful day, and Brad said No driving here on Hwy 11 north, alot of sharp corners.. but as soon as we get to the four lane, in Manitoba, you may drive,
l said that is fine, we saw deer, moose, they wanted to run beside us well we were driving down the road, and it snowed abit, sun shone, and then we stopped every 4 hours , had a coffee , check load .. We had a Van on this time it was full of table and chairs for the Holiday Inns, Calgary, Edmonton, Prince George, then Vancouver...
We hit the Manitoba Border, the next day, and Wow l got to drive, it was soooo neat, But the secret today was NO grinding gears... If you grind one gear you must Stop with 4ways on (for caution) on the side of the road and run around trailer check tires 3 times, NO walking.
Well.
l got a red lite at Deacon's Corners, and when l was turning right to go into the parking lot, oops l missed a gear, and wow l got slapped accross the side of the head ( not hard) lol. but he made me stop get out, and run like a crazy person around the truck and trailer, well l felt sooo stupid , and looked foolish .. l don't ever want to do that again l said...
We found a parking spot, and he said well, now what are you going to here now. do you think you can pull in and park straight or should you go around and straighten your self out and back straight in. guess what l did?
Yep l did went around all the trucks, came back accross in front of all them and turned left, straightened out and he told me what to turn the wheel and watch the trailer, you will see if your going over to far, or over guiding it,, back.. Ok , so the way l went, he was a Great Teacher.. he sat in the passenger seat and guided me into parking spot Perfectly..
It was cool... so then Wow l felt so proud and EVERYONE was watching this lady back in and back in the day of 1979 when hardly any women drove Tractor Trailers, they were amazed, l had quite a few men tell me l did very good !! Needless to say l was pretty tickled pink about that...
The day went on, and l kept driving, and he let me drive all accross Manitoba, into SK, that was awesome, then the weather turned on us, it became very cool, and you could see the frost, and the roads were getting slick. So Brad said well young lady, l have had a good nap. l feel great and maybe we should stop and switch. l am not liking these roads..
Ok l said, and l pulled into Moosemin Sk. We grabbed a few snacks, filled our coffee mugs, and the way we went, yes they were quite slick in areas, and the trailer did not like them at all.
But we got to Regina Sk and called it a nite, we went and got a nice motel room, and showered and headed down stairs to have a awesome supper and a couple of beers, it was fun, and we met some nice people ..
But that is it for today folks, but l had to get back in here and type l really want to share my years on the road with Young ladies who would like to get into Driving, Semi's and let them know a little about it... until next time toodles...
June 09 2011
Hey everyone, well now. lets get on with my story.
The next morning came, and up and made coffee in room had shower, got ready for the day. we lifted hood on the Rig, checked the oil, rad, hoses, made sure all was ok with the big girl and fired her up, she ran for about 1 hour, well we went in this Nice restaurant and had a great breakfast... ,before we new it a hour had gone, and had to get on the road,... we were heading into Calgary, but making a stop in Medicine Hat Alberta ( amazing this is where l live now)
We stopped on 7th street and did some laundry up. had to be Calgary the following morning, so it worked out great, we were in Medicine Hat by 12 noon, and laundry done, lunch done by 2 30pm and on our way. to cow town, they call Calgary Alberta..
We arrived there and hoky doodles if we did not run into people we knew.. it was awesome, Brad's sister lives in Calgary and she new we were on our way, but Brad never mentioned it to me..
so it was nice treat, we went to there home, showered and all four of us went out on the town in Calary, we went out for supper at the Olive Garden, the to Cowboys, big country bar... We had a blast, and truely was a nice time..
the next morning , wow got up to Bacon and Eggs, coffee and we ate, showered, and on our way, Brad's sister drove us back to the semi, and chatted for awhile, then thought we had better get our first drop off at the Holiday Inn ( in the lounge) we had tables. chairs, stools and bar equipment, So we opened the doors on trailer, Brad got me to back in, yeay... he was such a great teacher, he let me drive, and let me back in, with his supervision. it was awesome, to be able to tell me How to and when to, turn, or guide...
We got the first drop off to our guys in Calgary, and off we were on our way to Prince George , Wow it was Beautiful. l can see it just like it was yesterday, the foothills had snow on the top, and the sun was shining and very warm, going through the mountians, it was cool but yet awesome day, no wind, very calm we call those days good truckin day... when when the sun is on our face, wind is at our backs and the roads are good...
It was awesome, the trees, hills and the homes sitting half way up the mountian, and snow tunnels we went through , out of this world it was the first time ever l went through a snow tunnel. and watching the train go through the hills and we could see the top of. it in spots, we were higher up, and some of the hills, were crazy.... !! going up them we had to drop a few gears, we lost alot of speed due the weight in our trailer, but it was neet , it gave me lots of time to look around and pretend l was a tourist. ha ha.
l had never drove through the mountians , but flown over them, in 1978, and now that was a awesome site to see.
anyways see you all tomorrow, my fam is calling me. chuckles and smiles.. for now.
June 10th
Well its FRIDAY... yeay... got lots done today, long walk at 6am, made banana bread (yum) cut the grass, watered the flowers, filled the puppy pool so the magets could have some fun..
Oh yes where were we again. oh yes we got to Prince George to the Holiday Inn, to deliver the tables, chairs, bar stools and new appliances it was nice there, the bar was called The Coachmen Lounge
It was a awesome nite life there indeed, they fed us supper, and gave us a couple of beers, for helping them unload and set up tables and chairs, very nice of them. but we could not stay to late as tomorrow as coming fast and we had to get to Vancouver still.
So we got a room at Truckers Discount ( 30.00 off ) not bad hey? Got some sleep, woke to a pot of coffee, breakfast brought to our room wow... how nice is that..
So up and atter ate breaky, and had shower did all that girly stuff, you know hair, makeup, nice cloths , just had to be all dolled up...
And on our way we went, the big girl was good, fired up and ran for 1/2 hour or so, well we went in and filled our coffee mugs and said good morning to the Staff at the lounge.
They were great people.
On our way we went up and down , around sharp corners, and WOW the view was Awesome... never in a million years thought at that time l would ever see the Canadiain rockies like that...
We went down through Williams Lake, 100 Mile House, and then into Kamloops BC and we stopped at the big Petro pass, and got fuel, and washed windows, parked truck and went in for a bite to eat, very nice place, nice poeple too. and wow the city is built into the side of a mountian.. its so cool there....
l really had alot of fun, and from there, we were again on our way, not to far now to Vancouver.
and the further we went the more beautiful it had gotten, the weather was holding out pretty good, nothin to major until that nite. It became very foggy and Brad said, girl l had better take over here, it can get pretty foggy and not nice along through here, so l said No probs, l don't like fog, and good thing we had big running lites on the fron ( air craft landing lites) wow when we turned them on YOU could see for a mile.... and it let people new we were close.. or at least on the way...
But things turned ugly after that, we hit fog, then it started to rain, and turn into sleet, it was awful. we could not see nothing, and drving about 80km per hour. trying to get to a safe spot to park for awhile , have a rest, and let the traffic die down.
So we did, we waited until day break, and the way we were off, it was still foggy but the sleet had let up and rain had let up a little, so it was a bit better driving.. its safer just to stop sometimes , then it is to push onward, due to cars, not being able to see and then they try and pass, and can't see, and then there's semi's coming at us, and wow can be a real mess.
But everything turned out a ok. and we got there and unloaded, then off to Chilawack BC, nice place, big Esso Truck Stop there, and we parked there, got a cab and went to the big mall shopping, now that was fun...
l bought a few things, had supper in the lounge the its called grillin and chillin cool place.. yep good food too.. the next morning , we arrived at our customer, our last one. on the trailer they were very nice people, we had fancy chairs, tables, and bar stools ,Wow nice place it was ,it was chillin back then.. as they call it. cool place to hang, drink a few cool ones, play pool and just relax, it had that layed back feelin.. so we got unloaded and headed back for Chilawack BC and it was another nice evening, more quiet tonite.. TV, dinner ordered and off to bed early... early to bed , early to rise makes a young lady healthy and wise
see you
Sun Jun 12th
Well another day , another dollar they say in Truckin, and when the sunshines we gotta make hay. so off and runnin like a herd of turtles, Wow rush hour in Chiliwack is nutty .. but its better then Toronto anyday... thats crazy there..
As the morning came, l awoke and jumped into shower, got ready for our trip heading back to Toronto , l had a blast, so off to fire up the big girl and let her warm,up , had coffee, breakfast and then we feuled up and were on our way...
It was a beautiful morning, looking ahead at the mountians, and the clouds moving past them you could see the peeks , then cloud then trees, it was Awesome, dew on the grass, and the cattle and horses grazing in the fields, as we strolled along, and admired the views. it was so Beautiful, it is a place, time, scene l would never forget, l can remember it like it was yesterday.... Wow set in my mind and heart for ever..
Hi there everyone, how's you doing today? Wow its been a crzy week here . l have been helping a wonderful couple get ready to move, packing, yapping, drinking cold beer eating pizza, but wow we worked to... we packed, moved, cleaned, took garbage runs, and got that awesome 5 bedroom home, 3 bathrooms, done nicely and up for listing in 5 days... Wow did they have a lot of things.... over the years funny how we can accumulate so much!!
Hello again... wow its summer already and very nice here in alberta. for sure. hot hot hot... now all l have to do is get in my pickup, hook to fifth wheeler , grab bike, and go camping, and riding... yes can't wait.. soon enough l guess.
So anyways. yes my years as a truck driver, have been up and down, good and bad. l had a really rough time, mostly with people, they ran me down, called me everything but my name, told l should be home, baking pies, and doing laundry where women should be.
Well now that got me even more tetermined to go further ahead with driving a semi. and l did, got my class one in Winnipeg MB in 1979... with a Dear friend of mine Serge Roy from Timmins Ontario, whom had moved to Wpg. for work,
He had his Freightliner on with Atomic Transport... l ran with Serge off and on for a year , when he felt comfortable , he said well young lady ( use to call me shithead) your ready, so l am going to leave you behind this trip, and let you go with Larry, the Safety man to get your class one, with air brakes.
So off he went and that was on Tues early, then my appointment was at 9 am to go with Larry, ok well l was a nervous wreck, and he said to me, go get truck number 23 and hook it to trailer, 103 tandem van.
So the way l go. l knew in the back of mind he's watching me, and so are 12 other people, so girl you'd better do this rite the first time, or u are done..
l proceeded to truck 23 , lifted hood, checked belts, power steering, rad, oil, all fluids, put hood down, locked and checked tires, air lines, jumped up in truck fired it up
let it run, to build up air pressure.
Well it was running, l strolled over to Trailer 103 and checked tires, brake lines, glad hand couplers. make sure all was in tacked. and reefer unit did run, but that was ok, it was empty and not going out to load until Wed.. am
So out came Larry, , how yeh doin he says. l said l am doing ok... well lets rock and roll he says .
l jumped up in the drivers seat, let the air out of seat, put seat belt on bleed down air pressure, to make sure it would build back up. checking for leaks.
l realeased brakes. and then pushed down on brake pedal. making sure they did work... and put it in 1st gear and pulled away, wheeled around got myself lined up, with trailer, backed up to trailer, dump suspension, so it lowers the truck to go under trailer, smoother and then l stopped before l hooked, jumped out of truck check to make sure, l was not to low, or trailer had been dropped to high ( now thats not nice when your loaded, and the trailer pins goes over 5th wheel plate.
Yeay all was well. l jumped back in backed into trailer eeeeeezzze... and hooked, put in first gear, and gave it a tug to make sure trailer was Hooked.... then into neutral. and pulled on brake... tractor only.
l jumped out hooked up service line, and air line to trailer... checked tires, brake lines, reefer unit on front of trailer, opened doors on trailers made sure nothing was in that trailer...
June. 26
Then l r an around truck, trailer and back into truck... proceeded to charge trailer by pushing in the red button on dash, which gives air to trailer so we can move and roll....
Well larry got out his clipboard, and question sheet.. with boxes on it Y or N wow that scared me alot, so we left the yard in Winnipeg off of Logan heading for downtown Winnipeg, yuck, and he said ,, you know what Cindy, this clipboard is making me nervous and he chuckled and threw it in the back, and the way we went, we drove all over Winnipeg,
l backed into parking spots at Deacons Corners, at the Huskey parked and went into visit Larry's wife, she was a Hostess there, very nice lady, and we had lunch the 3 of us... It wasn't to bad at all. and the nicest thing was l passed with flying colors, then the next day was the Drivers Test for Manitobia.. and that went very well. so as of Nov 1979 l had got my Class 1 with Air Endorsment... under MB...
That was awesome !! l was so proud of me, then l could run with Serge for a few trips, and then l would go on my own and thats what l did.... until next time... toodles.
Well hi everyone. sorry l was gone for a few days , but duty called.. but l am back and ready to get going on my story ,
So as l was telling you.. l did get my class 1 with air, and ran a few trips with my friend Serge and then, l went back to my home town, l had got hired by a gentlman from New Liskard, Bob.. and l ran 5 trips to Vancouver for a company called Trojan, we delivered, frozen, and clothing to stores all the way from Winnipeg, Regina,Calgary, and vancouver...
It was ok l learn't alot about running team, with someone else, l did NOT like it one little bit, so after l had ran these few trips with Bryan. l found out what some people are really like ..
Its kinda like trying on shoes. some fit and some don't... we did not fit. he was a nice person, and all. but just not my bag... you know.. running team, being on a tight time frame, and when the weather was bad, we pushed to hard..
So wow, when l got done running those few trips l said Never again.. and l didn't ,, l went to stay withmy mom in Barrie and found a job. running for Laidlaw Transport... now that wasn't bad.. my first load was , hook up to trailer with yellow jacket pipe, and go from Hamilton Ont to SSmarie Ont.. drop the pipe at pipeline .. then take empty trailer to the Soo, and load Steel out of algoma steel plant back to Hamilton...
So off l went. it was cold, and snowing, that early morning, and all l was thinking at that time was *what am l doing out here*... ? nasty it was... but thats the part of driving , No one likes.
it was all good, l got to Hamilton, hooked to trailer, got my straps out, threw over the load of pipe, got pipe and tighten straps and checked trailer, truck all over good before l left. got my paper work, BL for customer, filled out log book, and got coffee and l was on my way.... to Elliot Lake to drop off pipe... things went great until l got to Elliot Lake, well now this was going to be fun.... l had to take truck on this home made road, into bush, cross over a embankment, it was nasty ( now l would not even think of doing this ) anyways everyone was getting stuck, l am thinkin to me self.. wow, holy crap l don't like this, but it seems as if some of the guys felt the same, but we all did it... we got half way cross, and out came the big bulldozer, hooked his chain up to the front of my semi... and pulled me up and over then l went accross ... it was very infigurating.. wow woke me up l tell yeh that much..
Life at that moment scared me, but at the same time, l said, gee wonder what all my friends are doing rite now... lol
so needless to say. it was not a bad day.. the dozer operator came over to me, and said.. wow l didn't realize it was a little lady runnin that rig. you did a mighty fine job there... good for you. well then my ego went yeay... l did it... cool... and they actually said hi and good job... cool..
We got all the loads of pipe up the hill, down the other side, and accross the homemade roads, to the pipe line. it was awesome... it was...
l got tugged pulled, and winched for 4 weeks like that and needless to say l kinda got use to it... lol
June. 30th
Hello everyone, l am back,,, well now the days of hauling pipe and steel was something else. l was ran down for being a woman , so this one rainy nite l was driving from Elliot Lake Ont to The Soo Ont. to reload with steel., l got to Algoma steel and there was 5 of our other drivers there...
well needless to say, l had my work cut out for me, they were friendly but yet not willing to lend a hand. oh well l thought to my self, no biggy. l wanted this job, l can do it to..
so the gentleman loaded me with a over head crane, and put these big coils of steel on my trailer, and then when he was done. l proceeded to chain them down, with chains and bear traps... l got them hooked and bear trapped and then it was trap time, now that's special.. when the traps weigh more then l did.. lol. l weighed no more then 110 pounds and they were at least 150 pounds folded , so l got them laid out... and started tuggingover the coils. well with a little sweat and tugging l got them.. all put in place, strapped and bungy strapped down. and l was dirty, so l proceeded into the washroom, washed up. and went out to get my bills and all the guys were awaiting in the drivers room.. l walked in to fill coffee mug, and they all looked at me...
The one fellow, said, nicely done young lady, and l have something to say to you... l got my back up a bit. and kinda shied away.. l said really , did l do something wrong?
No you did the opposite. we did not help you Cindy, we needed to know, if we were not with you in the future that you would be ok, and do fine on your own., and now that we know you can do the job, we will be here for you to help and hopefully we can all be friends...
Well l was shocked!!! l said you know something, that was very nice of you. and l thank you. for the compliment and l would be happy to help yous while tarping to... thanks guys..
your a cool bunch...
From that day , l met alot of nice people, some useless, some mean,, but in most cases the guys l worked with, all were married had families, and this was there life, and how they provided for there families. and l respected them alot..
The days, weeks went by just working away. and Stew my dispatcher ask me hey girl. would you like to go over to buckets, and run Nova Scotia.? for a few trips ,, l said ok. never been there, so it was a adventure...
l got my new trailer, bucket with dog food meal for Truro Nova Scotia. and the way l went , stopped in Belleville, had shower, supper and on the way...
l went through Montreal. and l was a nervous wreck, l was. all alone, not knowing a soul.l stopped outside of Montreal at this truck stop. and l met a few guys that lived in the East . and l got to talking to them in Restaurant and l followed them down through New Brunswick, to Truro NS. to deliver my first drop... its really nice there, very quiaint. it is....
So there l was in NS and unloaded, called in for reload and Stew dispatched me and said, go to the Fith Wheel in Purth , and wash the truck/trailer , you have to go and load this special product to bring back to Hamilton.
Oky doky , so on my way l went to Pruth , and had a shower, ate lunch and waited for the turck and trailer to washed out, and shone up.. it looked good for a Mack Yuck l hated that truck... the trailer looked great... the truck not...
so as l was awaiting, my friends l had met came rolling in.. yeay l said a friendly face.. so Phil, Ron and l ran down deeper in Digby and they were going close to there. so we had a fun evening, went for pizza, beers, and chatted in the restaurant for 3 hours, then it was bed time, my head hit my pillow, and l was out.!! Wow it was fun though, and getting to know these guys was very important to me, it gave me some kind of ( gee at least l know a few people out here now ) you know...
But as daybreak broke, and the sun was shining, it was a beautiful day. up and at it... l arised and got dressed, made my bed, straighten up my truck, went in, had a shower, and coffee and on my way..
l reloaded and tarped , then off and running for Hamilton Ont...at that time in my life it seemed l was million miles away and l felt lost at times, lonely and sometime wishing l was closer to home, but as the days, nites and weeks passed l got use to being alone. l loved it, yes it was job, but l had no one looking over my shoulder, no 15 min coffee breaks at 10am, nor 12-12 .30 lunch's.
l stopped when l wanted to, ate when l wanted to, smoked when l wanted to, talked to only the people l wanted to talk to.. and you get use to that life, you become part of the life, its really not a job, its a way of life, and alot people and my friends could not understand why l loved it so much. they ran me down, called me a slut, called me a useless trucker, and it hurt me so. l went to sleep alot of nites crying over who people saw me, and treated me differently because l did something different then most women.. did back in 1979 ... there were very few lady drivers back then. and l was one of them..
The trips went by, summer was here and wow, it was nice. l got every weekend off, went to stay with my mom sometimes, sometimes home to see my dad... life was ok, but there was something missing...
l was not as happy as l was when l started.. but then one nite, l went into hook up my trailer to go to Akron OH. and there he was standing there beside this Beautiful Cab over KW and my heart beated and it was like wow,,, where did u come from.. my oh my . and so l carried on, doing my job and never minede what (mike) was doing. but as l was getting ready to go inside , this dark, long haired good looking man, followed me inside, l went to the bathroom , washed up and came out and Mike was standing there.. with these blue eyes that caught me , just like that...
So we started chatting, and Mike ask me where l was going, so l told him, and a big smile came on his face. well dear l would love to run behind you to Akron OH. l am going that way as well.
Oh really l said sounds great... are you ready? just about , he says, ok then , l will go and get coffee, do paper work, wait for you to do the same. ok then he says... see you in a few min.
Wow, what a fun trip, we ran across the border and stopped at this little union 76 for a coffee at 10pm and chatted until 3 am, NO way,,,,, no sleep, tired, and oh well,, it was all good.we laughed, and shared stories for a few hours, and on our way we went.... so needless to say the feelings came out and we got along great....
So days went by and one day l was sitting, in Hamilton at yard and this awesome KW rolls in, yeay it was Mike... my eyes lit up and l said yeay my friend is here. it was nice to see him.. he just had a way about him... he lived at home with his mom, after his dad passing a few months earler. moved back in with her to make sure all would be ok...
so anyways mike came walking over to my semi, and ask me, hey little lady whatcha doing this weekend, l said, well l was going to go to Barrie, why do you ask.. he ask me to go to Dresden to a family and friends BBQ... well . now how is a girl to say no to that?
long black hair, wavy , blue eyes dark skin, and nice build... you know... nice boots... lol so of course l said. l would love to go...
He said, well now. would you like to come with me, or bring truck, so l thought about it, and said you know what... l think l have a trip into The Windy City.. for Mon.. l am just waiting for a for sure, thing then l will follow you ,, how bout that for apples... he laughed , an d said awesome,, that will work..
Yep l did have a trip for The Windy City ( Chicago) and off we went, l ran behind him, across the 401 west to Dresden cut off and went north. it was a awesome hot. long weekend, people were nice, and we stayed at his friends place, we laughed, drank beers, and ate alot of food...
He became a very good friend, and was honestly concerned about me crossing the border, he had my trip all layed out. and ask me to call him asap when l got there, so he would not worry about me... my it was nice knowing that someone cared... that much.. l did the same with my mom to... just to let her know l was ok... it settles the heart, and calms you.. to know your ok ...
July 1st.... Happy Canada Day.. yeppers l am Canadian and love it.. and \happy independance day on July 4th too!!
So getting on with my story.. of my ridin and gliden life started to change for me along the way. l met my new friend mike and we became very good friends, l use toad up on fri am and run to dresdin ontario to visit him and spend the weekends there, we had bbqs. visit with his family hung with friends, played volley ball. football, scoccer. we always had fun. the rigs would be parked side by side and we would not look at them for 2 days , it was nice for sure...
then things started to change , my company started running me east to ottawa , and hawkesbury with empty racks for loading and l met this fellow named dave , well. we became friends and time went by and missing my friend mike, and they kept us appart and we were upset over it. but as time went by l started to hang with dave and his friends and we started to hit it off , and before we knew it we were dating, and then wow. it happened, we became a couple.. holy crap l said... things went really well for a few years. then l lost my brother, due to a fishing trip. dave had a bad fall and was in a coma in toronto, things got really tough and very sad in my life, dave was out of my life for 3 months and the loss of my brother was awful .. sad. l became very angry, sad, missing both. \
then time went on, and dealing with his family, was terrible , they made me very sad. and angry , they wanted us appart l felt, and not wanting me around. l became very upset, and here l was with a home, semi, dogs, bills, pick up and a car all needed to be paid. it was no less then scary... then daves insurance came through thank goodness for his insurance, and then \ken Worth in mississauga , we only had to pay insurance on the \kW until we got back to work, our place of business would not me drive due this time, stress, anger and just not my self ... so here l was. could not go home, to lonely and to far away from everyone. but l did stay there a bit.\
l went to my dads, then down to my moms and kept staying with everyone else... missing my life, and family l felt all alone. depressed and living in a dark place for about 6 months. needless to say finnaly things did turn around,, the hospital called and told me that dave had came out of his coma, and wanted to see me. WOW l was amzed happy nutty l was. l jumped in my pickup and the way l went for the 3 hr run to hospital.. l got there and wow to my surprise the whole dam fam was there. it was awful... l felt so alone, my fam was not near. and so l just held my head high,,, and went in to see dave, and his fam came in, and dave ask them to leave us alone, we needed to talk.... ok then, when they left. dave tolde me that the doctors wanted him to go his parents to stay for 3 months until he was totally ok, and close to hospital , well what was l to say... they were right.. but l felt lost and had no control over anything then... not even my own life...
The way he went to his mom and dads, in brampton ontario and l was 3 hrs away so this was the way it was.. for now. this was my life.... l was thinking to my self do l want this,, do l...
